My family had just moved into a decent two bedroom apartment in Ailegun, Ejigbo Lagos and was yet to settle in when we were mandated to move out again. We had just spent one month in the apartment when the agent came to break the sad news to my father that the landlord in America didn't want any tenant in our apartment.
The agent had rented out the apartment against the landlord's wish and he wanted us out.
We felt crushed because after spending months looking for a suitable apartment, we finally got this one and now we were asked to move again. My parents appeal to the landlord fell on deaf ears so three days later, we were packing our stuffs again.
The agent apologized profusely for the discomfort and promised to help us look for an even better apartment. True to his word, he took my father to see some apartments and a few days later, daddy returned grinning like a Cheshire cat.
"Guess what kids?" He asked excitably and without waiting for a reply, continued, "we've gotten another apartment!"
The cloud of sorrow that had hung over us transformed to sunshine as we let out whoops of joy. We wouldn't have to live with packed boxes for long and we'd be going to someplace better, or so, we thought.
But our mother didn't share our optimism. Ever since the incident with the landlord, she felt wary of the agent's intentions. He had after all been the one who got us in this predicament in the first place. Father tried to reassure her, that night.
"Don't worry dear, this time around the agent got us a good deal and I met the landlord myself. This apartment is as good as gold!"
Three days later, we were shown into a room and parlor self-contain apartment unable to contain a family of seven. We ended up living in this 'good as gold' apartment for the next eight years.
